Following our thorough testing, we are poised to uncover the extent to which the EQE aligns with the brand's values and stands out as one of the premier fully electric AMG models.

 The Mercedes EQE, a midsize sedan, features sleek body lines meticulously designed for enhanced aerodynamics. Embracing the brand's latest design language, Mercedes asserts that it embodies a fusion of intelligence and emotion. Nevertheless, the aesthetics are likely to be strongly influenced by the engineering team's pursuit of aerodynamic optimization. The outcome is a remarkable drag coefficient of just Cd=0.26 for the AMG models and an even more impressive Cd=0.242 for the non-AMG variants. The variation is attributed to the more aggressive AMG body kit, which, while subtly disrupting the airflow, significantly enhances the vehicle's visual appeal.

 

 Our examined vehicle was a Mercedes-Benz EQE 43 AMG 4Matic presented in "Graphite gray metallic." Positioned as the second-highest tier in the EQE lineup, it is surpassed solely by the EQE 53 AMG 4Matic+, which delivers increased power but comes with a considerably higher price tag.

 

The EQE has been available for approximately a year, marking Mercedes' second fully electric sedan. Aligning with its nomenclature, it aspires to be the electric vehicle counterpart to the well-received E-class, seeking to entice customers into embracing electric mobility through distinctive styling and enhanced interior technology.

 

 In a market segment where competition is intensifying, and sedan sales are witnessing a decline, the EQE finds itself strategically positioned. Notably, Mercedes has also made it available as an SUV, preparing for potential shifts in consumer preferences.

 The front of the EQE 43 AMG 4Matic is characterized by a low and wide design, featuring a prominent Mercedes emblem at the center. The front grille, serving as a large piece of plastic, conceals the car's radars and sensors. The vertical stripes, providing the appearance of a traditional grille, can be presented in either a blacked-out or chrome-mimicking style. However, both versions are perceived as somewhat gaudy and exhibit a cheap aesthetic.

 

 The headlight units feature Mercedes' standard "Digital Light" technology, equipped as a default for this model. These units include the distinctive LED daylights, offering an additional feature of projecting images onto the surface in front of the vehicle, akin to a home projector. Despite this unique and quirky detail, there is no compromise in the performance of the headlights, as they illuminate the darkest roads with brightness.

 

 In general, the front appearance of the EQE 43 AMG does not exude a fierce or aggressive demeanor; rather, it can be aptly described as having a "somber" expression, evident in the downward orientation of its headlights and grille. The lack of aggressiveness is accentuated by the minimal distinctions between the base EQE 300 and the more athletic EQE 43 AMG. At first glance, they appear nearly identical upfront, with only a slightly more dynamic bumper featuring two small front canards on each side of the lower vents for the AMG model. Additionally, the vertical stripes on the grille are exclusive to the AMG variant.

 

 Transitioning to the side profile of the vehicle, it boasts an elevated window line that once again descends at both ends, contributing to its bulbous appearance.

 

 Below the doors, there are two distinct body lines originating from the front arches and concluding at the rear ones. While these lines are a characteristic feature of other Mercedes models, this time, the upper line once again slopes downward on both sides, creating an illusion that the vehicle is broader than its actual dimensions.

 

 The door sills are finished in black and feature a noticeable chrome line that distinguishes them from the rest of the body. Their appearance remains consistent across all trim levels, with the only variation being the lower positioning in the AMG models, contributing to a more athletic aesthetic.

 

The door handles of the EQE emerge automatically when the vehicle is approached, adding a stylish element and contributing to streamlined body lines and reduced drag. Mercedes emphasizes that this feature enhances the EV's range. However, as with similar mechanisms on EVs, freezing during severe winter conditions may pose a challenge, as there is no alternative method of entry. Preheating the interior remotely is recommended to prevent this issue.

 

 The wheels adhere to the prevailing automotive trend of being notably flat and aerodynamic. In contrast to some manufacturers that employ plastic hub caps to conceal the true wheel, Mercedes has successfully integrated actual wheels that are both aerodynamic and aesthetically pleasing. The wheel design, featuring five spokes in this instance, incorporates a secondary layer with gills behind, imparting a sporty and aggressive appearance while ensuring efficiency during driving. Mercedes provides various other wheel designs that adhere to the same principle.

The rear of the EQE is notably distinctive and boasts a considerably sportier design. The defining feature is a large LED bar spanning from side to side, featuring an assertive light signature that contributes to an impressive road presence.

The bold rear design is accentuated by the larger-than-standard ducktail spoiler and the substantial black lower skirt, exclusive to the AMG models. Paired with the air vents on each side of the bumpers, despite being non-functional, they contribute to a more imposing and aggressive road presence.

Stepping into the EQE welcomes you to a contemporary space adorned with premium materials and expansive screens. The tactile and visual aspects of every material exude quality and sophistication. However, the drawback lies in the suboptimal build quality, with numerous creaks and rattles present, aspects that are not befitting a car in this class and price range.

The driver's perspective in the EQE 43 AMG is centered around a focused and sporty ambiance. The narrow windows, snug seats, and the AMG steering wheel collectively craft a streamlined view upfront, leaving the driver with the sensation of being in a genuine sports car. While this design choice may compromise spaciousness, it is a justifiable trade-off in pursuit of the emotional connection felt behind the wheel. The absence of the optional sunroof further intensifies the sports car interior experience.

 

The steering wheel stands out as a testament to both design excellence and functionality. Mercedes has employed this steering wheel design consistently, setting it apart from other manufacturers. Its intuitive interface facilitates the control of all infotainment functions, accessible on both the gauge cluster and the center screen. This design ensures a comfortable driving experience for drivers of all preferences and styles.

The display behind the steering wheel is equally remarkable, boasting impressive graphics and an optional 3D interface. The EQE provides the flexibility to choose various appearances for the gauge cluster, each offering distinct functionalities. Whether opting for a sports-centric display emphasizing speed and current power usage, a classic layout mimicking traditional gauges, or a full-screen map with a minimal speed indicator, the EQE caters to diverse preferences.

Moreover, the driver screen can be customized to showcase real-time data about the vehicle, including upcoming services, tire pressures, range, efficiency, battery status, and more. With its spacious 12.3" diagonal, the display ensures readability even when presenting a multitude of information simultaneously.

Pairing the impressive gauge screen with the optional head-up display (HUD) creates an optimal driving environment. The HUD features sharp resolution and is strategically positioned at an ideal height, eliminating the need to divert attention to the gauge screen. Offering practical information, it displays speed, speed limits, activated driving aids, and navigation cues when a destination is set. Furthermore, the design of the HUD adapts based on the selected vehicle mode, enhancing its versatility.

Almost incredulous, the excellence continues as we delve into the central console. The EQE provides two choices for central displays, commencing with the familiar 12.8" vertically-positioned screen seen in the current S-class and C-class models. Although it is a relatively sizable screen situated low in the central control stack, its performance is truly fantastic.

The more upscale alternative, as witnessed in our test vehicle, is the expansive 17.7" center display, which revolutionizes the entire interior of the vehicle. It extends to incorporate the digital gauge cluster and even introduces a 12.3" passenger screen. All these displays are unified into a single unit with an impressive width of 142 cm combined. Dubbed the "Hyper Screen" by Mercedes, it stands as a technological marvel, though its price tag of nearly €9,000 is a hefty investment, even for a premium car like the EQE.

As previously noted, the "Hyper Screen" is accompanied by a passenger display, positioned directly in front of the passenger seat. This is a thoughtful inclusion, providing entertainment for the front-seat passenger without causing distractions for the driver. It incorporates all the functionalities of the central screen, proving useful in situations where the passenger wishes to control specific features without interfering with the driver's management of the vehicle.

The central console extends beneath the screens, featuring a substantial storage compartment that conceals the cupholders and the wireless charging tray. The cupholders can be effortlessly detached, revealing an even more spacious storage area. Within this compartment, you'll find 2 USB-C ports and an NFC reader.

Below the feet of the front passenger, there is an additional spacious storage area equipped with two USB-C charge ports. This compartment comes with its own strap to secure items like groceries or bags, preventing them from falling while driving.

Linking the central console to the armrest is a control stack responsible for various vehicle features. This stack includes the start button, hazard lights, buttons for cameras, the charge port door, and various AMG displays and settings. A futuristic addition is the fingerprint scanner, directly linked to the preset preferences of the specific user for the EQE. This panel also manages the audio system's volume and power settings.

The armrest is broad and features leather stitching, yet disappointingly, it lacks a locking mechanism. Despite its considerable depth and storage capacity, it has an odd small compartment at the end that is too small to hold items like pens or credit cards.

The front row seats in the EQE 43 AMG have a sportier design compared to the standard versions, featuring a slightly snugger fit and various upholstery choices. Our test car was furnished with Artico synthetic leather paired with two-tone Microcut, a material resembling a blend of suede and alcantara. Real leather is also available as an option for an additional cost of around €2,500. Additionally, optional features include seat heating, cooling, and even massage functions.

The doors incorporate controls for the windows and seats. The seat controls maintain Mercedes' longstanding design with buttons resembling the seat, and manipulating them adjusts the corresponding part of the seat. This has been an intuitive action for nearly 50 years, given that the buttons were once movable. However, with the current stationary design lacking haptic feedback, using this seemingly straightforward configuration is a less enjoyable experience. Over time, one adapts to it, but it still doesn't match the satisfaction of traditional buttons.

The rear seats offer ample space with generous leg and headroom. The reviewer, standing at 1.95 m (6'4") tall, encountered no issues fitting comfortably in the back.

The seats are plush and provide a comfortable experience. Unfortunately, opting for separate climate controls for the rear seats comes at an additional cost, and standard backseat occupants typically rely on just two small climate vents.

An intriguing aspect of our car was the optional red seatbelts, adding a stylish touch. However, oddly enough, the middle seat in the second row retained the standard black seatbelt. It's unclear whether this is a result of cost-cutting or an intentional decision, but it does appear unusual and disrupts the uniform appearance of the back seat.

Storage and practical features within the EQE are typical for a sedan. The trunk space measures 430 liters, which falls within the average range for its class and is not particularly noteworthy. The trunk design is well-proportioned with minimal indents, facilitating the full utilization of its size. However, a drawback is the relatively high and narrow opening, making it challenging to accommodate large and heavy suitcases.

When the rear seats of the EQE are folded, the trunk expands significantly, albeit without achieving a flat bottom. This could pose a challenge when attempting to load larger items such as furniture or home appliances.

Within the cabin, numerous storage spaces are provided for small items, including door pockets and pockets on the back of the seats. The expansive storage area between the driver and the passenger beneath the center console enhances practicality for daily use.

Large electric vehicles often feature a front trunk (frunk), given the absence of a sizable engine up front. Surprisingly, the EQE lacks a front storage compartment and doesn't provide the option to open the hood. The only accessible component is a small reservoir on the side designated for washer fluid.

Behind the wheel of the Mercedes EQE 43 AMG 4Matic, the driving experience is gratifying, delivering joy and excitement. The car exhibits a planted and exceptionally stable feel even at high speeds. Notably, the turning radius is impressive for a vehicle of its size. Staying true to the Mercedes ethos, the EQE offers a relaxed driving experience that instills confidence.

The steering wheel is responsive yet maintains a connection with the road, striking a balance by providing the right amount of feedback without making the drive feel strenuous. When switched to sport mode, it firms up to enhance control, and in comfort mode, it contributes to a more laid-back driving experience.

The EQE's driving experience is further enhanced by its suspension, resting on Mercedes' renowned AirMatic air suspension. This system ensures exceptional comfort during the ride. Notably, it undergoes substantial adjustments across various driving modes, providing a comfortable journey in comfort mode and a dynamically responsive performance in sport mode. Additionally, a neutral mode caters to those seeking a balanced driving experience.

The EQE 43 AMG imparts a false sense of confidence during cornering, as the body doesn't lean much into the turn. However, the tires eventually succumb to the pressure exerted by the weight. Despite the use of sporty Pirelli P Zero tires on the test vehicle, they struggled to cope with the substantial forces generated by the EQE.

The Mercedes EQE 43 AMG boasts a ground clearance of 134 mm, which, while not excessively low, combined with its lengthy 3,120 mm wheelbase, may lead to occasional scraping on uneven roads. During our testing, the vehicle experienced a few instances of bottoming out in areas where most others navigated without issue. This aspect should be taken into account when traversing level driveways or encountering higher-speed bumps.

In terms of technological features, the Mercedes EQE stands out as one of the best, offering a state-of-the-art infotainment system alongside the latest safety functionalities.

Commencing with the infotainment system, our test vehicle featured the optional "Hyper Screen," seamlessly integrating three expansive screens into a singular unit on the dashboard. This configuration not only exudes a futuristic aesthetic but also enhances the overall onboard experience.

The central display boasts a myriad of functionalities, and unraveling all its capabilities is a task that demands several days devoted exclusively to navigating through every conceivable menu and option.

A useful feature is the camera system for when the vehicle is stationary at a traffic light. It provides a real-time view of the intersection, ensuring constant visibility of the signal. Utilizing the upper front camera, it hones in on the red light to present this perspective. This proves immensely beneficial in congested traffic scenarios when an obstruction might impede the view. It represents a well-executed implementation of the cameras integrated for the 360-degree view.

The camera system ranks among the industry's finest, offering complete customization of the view and delivering high-quality imaging. It accurately renders the EQE, capturing details like the body color with crisp precision. This camera system excels even in low-light conditions, ensuring excellent performance during nighttime driving.

The built-in navigation system demonstrates remarkable accuracy. The augmented reality feature enhances navigation by overlaying real-time directional arrows onto an image of the current road. This immersive experience, generated through the camera system, adds a video game-like element to driving the EQE.

Another intriguing yet somewhat less critical feature of this vehicle is the air purifier, designed to combat the escalating issue of urban pollution. The EQE includes a window display indicating the external air quality and illustrating the positive impact of the air purifier within the cabin.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto function seamlessly wirelessly, benefiting from the expansive screen for easy usability. On the flip side, wireless charging is a feature that might be better overlooked. In our tests with seven different devices, it only proved successful once, and even then, it seemed to generate more heat than effectively charge the phone.

The passenger display provides full autonomy from the primary center screen while allowing access to the same features. If desired, the passenger can also showcase information from the gauge cluster, promoting seamless information interchange among all displays.

A practical feature is that if the passenger is watching videos or engaging in various forms of entertainment while the vehicle is in motion, the driver is unable to view them, minimizing potential distractions.

The passenger display screen remains inactive when the seat is unoccupied, presenting a screensaver featuring an image of the Mercedes Vision AVTR. This concept car serves as the spiritual predecessor of the EQE and the entire EQ lineup for Mercedes.

The updated MBUX system in the EQE 43 AMG incorporates AI technology to understand and adjust to the driver's lifestyle, habits, and routines. It suggests frequently taken routes, alerts about traffic congestion, and acts as an assistant by proposing calls to frequently contacted contacts and notifying about upcoming calendar events.

Ride Comfort

The Mercedes EQE 43 AMG 4Matic provides excellent comfort during driving. It delivers a well-balanced and adaptive performance, allowing you to tailor the ride to your preferences. In sport mode, it exhibits a firm and direct feel, while in comfort mode, it exudes luxury and effectively smoothens out bumps and potholes. The only drawback lies in the car's weight, noticeable when encountering significant bumps and during rapid cornering on winding roads.

Cabin Noise

The EQE 43 AMG's cabin noise is exceptionally low. The streamlined raindrop shape, coupled with outstanding insulation, creates an impressively quiet interior. Wind noise is virtually nonexistent, and tire noise becomes noticeable only at higher speeds. The occasional creaks and rattles resulting from suboptimal build quality are the only factors that disrupt the otherwise serene ambiance.

With launch control engaged, we surpassed Mercedes' officially listed times, achieving a sprint from 0 to 100 km/h in an impressive 3.87 seconds. The power delivery is consistent, maintaining swift acceleration up to around 130 km/h, where the vehicle's weight begins to impact performance. The top speed attainable is 215 km/h.

AMG's braking capabilities are evident, but the substantial mass of the EQE presents a challenge. Bringing the EQE 43 AMG to a halt from 100 km/h takes 37 meters (121 feet), which falls short of exceptional. However, the vehicle exhibits consistent results even with multiple hard stops from such speeds, and this remains true without the need for the carbon-ceramic brake kit, exclusive to the EQE 53 AMG 4Matic+.

Acceleration and deceleration measurements are conducted using a RaceBox device inside the car, with testing performed by a single occupant, air conditioning on, and traction control off.

Consumption

The EQE 43 AMG is tailored for higher speeds, exhibiting higher energy consumption in city driving but excelling in efficiency at elevated speeds. Testing was carried out at an ambient temperature of 25°C, close to the optimal conditions for such assessments (21°C).

While the Audi's range is a drawback, its charging capability reaches up to 270 kW. Interior space in the GT quattro is more constrained than the EQE, yet the sportier handling and lower seating position contribute to a more exhilarating driving experience.
