Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) disclosed on Wednesday that its cloud-based email system fell victim to a breach by Midnight Blizzard, a hacking group associated with Russia and responsible for the recent intrusion into Microsoft's corporate network. The enterprise tech company reported that it was notified on December 12 about the breach and subsequent data exfiltration from a "small percentage" of HPE mailboxes, which began in May 2023. HPE stated that the breach is likely related to a prior Midnight Blizzard attack that involved the exfiltration of a limited number of SharePoint files in May 2023. The impacted mailboxes primarily belonged to individuals in HPE's cybersecurity, go-to-market, and business teams. The company is currently investigating the incident, and the scope of the breach is yet to be determined. This revelation follows Microsoft's recent disclosure of a Midnight Blizzard attack on its corporate email accounts. The connection between the HPE and Microsoft incidents remains uncertain.
