Amazon has reversed its position and decided to discontinue the Request for Assistance (RFA) tool, a controversial feature allowing police and fire departments to request doorbell video through Ring’s Neighbors app. In a blog post, Eric Kuhn, head of the Neighbors app, stated that public safety agencies can still use the app for sharing safety tips, updates, and community events but will no longer have access to the RFA tool for video requests. This move comes after ongoing concerns raised by privacy advocates and public officials regarding the privacy implications and potential misuse of the tool.

Amazon's decision to end the RFA tool is seen as a significant change in policy and is likely to be applauded by privacy advocates. Electronic Frontier Foundation Senior Policy Analyst Matthew Guariglia acknowledged this step but emphasized the need for continued vigilance in ensuring user privacy, particularly regarding potential misuse and the handling of data. Guariglia stated that while it is a positive move, he remains skeptical about law enforcement's ability to determine emergencies that warrant the sharing of footage without a warrant or user consent. He also stressed the importance of implementing default end-to-end encryption and turning off default audio collection to enhance user privacy further.

This development follows years of criticism and public outcry over Amazon Ring's handling of user data and its cooperation with law enforcement agencies. In the past, Ring faced backlash for allowing police to automatically send requests for footage, and it eventually shifted to a system where police had to publicly post requests on the Neighbors app. The RFA tool was seen as a continuation of controversial practices, and its discontinuation is seen as a positive step toward addressing privacy concerns associated with Ring's products.
